PwnageTool 4.0 Release Info

On Monday, Apple released firmware 4.0 for the iPhone and iPod touch devices.  This of course was a major upgrade.

As advised, you shouldn’t have upgraded your devices if you have previously relied on our tools for hacktivation and/or a carrier unlock.

With that said, today we are releasing PwnageTool 4.0

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST CAREFULLY, THERE ARE KNOWN UPGRADE TRAPS AND DIFFERENT UPGRADE SCENARIOS THAT NEED TO BE FULLY UNDERSTOOD AND CONSIDERED BEFORE USING THESE TOOLS.

Each supported device has few different scenarios that users need to consider when performing the upgrades, you need to check below and perform the upgrade in the particular way that matches your current device state.

NB: With PwnageTool 4.0 certain devices are not supported this is because they are not supported in iOS 4.0 or they are not supported by our software.  We’re working on ways to get past these restrictions.

• iPhone 2G  - not supported
• iPod Touch – not supported
• iPod Touch 3G – not supported

PwnageTool 4.0 only recognizes the official IPSWs that came out yesterday. If you had developer access to the “4.0 GM” IPSWs, do not try to use those.

iPhone 3GS

Summary: Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.

• If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.
• If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.0

iPhone 3G

• If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
• If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.0 ipsw using DFU mode.
• If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
• As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.

IMPORTANT! Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.

iPod touch 2G

• If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode.
• As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.

Baseband Unlock

• As you probably know by now, ultrasn0w has been updated to cover all basebands from 04.26.08 onward.  Many thanks to@sherif_hashim for finding the crashing command that the new ultrasn0w 0.93 uses!  He worked hard at finding the crash, and he kept it confidential until the right time to use it.
• iPhone 3G and 3GS baseband unlockers (those who rely on ultrasn0w to make phone calls) should always be very wary to update their firmware, however our Ultrasn0w application will unlock all recent (including the current) 3GS and 3G baseband firmware versions.  Once you are jailbroken using PwnageTool 4.0, install ultrasn0w from Cydia and you’ll be unlocked.
• Remember! This baseband unlock situation is rare, should you upgrade your iPhone blindly at the next iOS release please don’t expect an unlock – but for now you are OK (whatever state your baseband is in).

During an Apple keynote, it’s almost impossible to catch all of the info flooding out of Moscone. One thing we did catch, and then had to search for, was something about “Bumpers.”

A quick look at the pages on the Apple Web site didn’t seem to show anything until I scrolled to the bottom of the Tech Specs page. Lo and behold, there was a very short description of Bumpers. Available in six colors (white, black, blue, green, orange, or pink), Bumpers slip over the stainless steel edge of your iPhone 4. They come with metal buttons for volume and power and are made of a combo of rubber and molded plastic.

This may explain why we’ve received several tips over the last few days from people saying that iPhone cases are being removed from the Apple Stores. Bumpers are Apple’s first foray into the iPhone case business (a market that has been run by third parties so far), and it will be fascinating to see not only how they sell, but what the reaction will be from long-time case manufacturers.
In other news, iLuv followed up the invisible Apple announcement of Bumpers with word of their own line of iPhone 4 cases and screen protectors (below). The company is introducing a line of screen protectors ranging in price from US $14.99 for clear or mirror screen protectors, $16.99 for a glare-free protector, $19.99 for a fingerprint-free protector, and $49.99 for a 2-way privacy screen protector.

iLuv is also coming out with a complete range of cases with prices from $19.99 for the SPECTRUM silicone case to $34.99 for the FUSION dual-layer case with stand (at far right, above).

This is sure to be the first announcement of a potential flood of iPhone 4 accessory releases. It looks like iPhone 4 owners will have plenty of choice from Apple and third-parties.

New to iBooks today will be Notes, Bookmarks and a page “displaying notes and bookmark” Jobs says. PDF viewing now built into iBooks app.

- App Store now offers 225,000 apps
- 15,000 apps submitted weekly
- 5 billion apps have been downloaded via the App store (as of last week). – – – – Apple has paid out one billion dollars to developers

Jobs noted a Nielsen survey which claims iPhone is second biggest mobile OS after RIM, observes ” 58.2% of US mobile browser usage” – 2.5 times more than Android

The iPhone Dev-Team has released a jailbreak for developers using iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4.

The jailbreak is performed using a special .9.5 beta of RedSn0w.

This BETA release supports:
● iPhone 3G only (for now)
● Mac OSX only (for now)
● the 4.0beta1/beta4 FW only (for now)

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That’s because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta1/beta4 IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you’ve already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.

SNES (HD) is my iPad port of the popular Super Nintendo emulator Snes9x. Though based on ZodTTD’s iPhone port snes4iphone, I have rewritten most of the iPhone specific code to match my own coding style and the iPad environment. Those interested can check out the source at mygithub repo.  It still needs a few finishing touches, but games are very playable and I think it’s cool enough to let loose into the wild.  Please let me know what you think!

I have no intention of ever charging for this app or including ads. This is strictly something I made because I wanted to play with it and have the skills to make it so. Usage

In order to use SNES (HD) you’ll need to put some Super Nintendo ROM files in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/SNES using your favorite file-transfer method.  Personally I like to use iFile or AFP (netatalkd), but whatever gets your motor running is fine, so long as the files end up in the right place.  Once you’ve got some games in there, start up SNES (HD) on the iPad and ControlPad on the iPhone, making sure that Bluetooth is enabled on both machines.  They should start looking for each other right away, and in a minute the ControlPad will pop up a little “Tap to Connect” view.  Tap on the entry for your iPad, and in a second the iPad will display an “Accept/Deny” screen.  Hit accept and you’ll be connected.  Then just select a ROM from the list on the left (if you’re in portrait mode, the list is accessible by tapping the “ROMs” button).  Hit the Power button and you’re good to go.  While playing the game, double-tap on the iPad’s screen to pull up a Save/Quit menu.  Whenever you save your state, a screenshot is taken, and it will be displayed when you select that save state later.  To load a save state, select one from the list below the console and hit the “Load” button instead of “Power”.

Building/Coding:

A quick note for those who were having trouble building the source:  You cannot use the Xcode project to build SNES-HD! Instead you have to issue a “make” command in the top-level source directory.  I included the Xcode project because it makes it easier to work with the Objective C code in Xcode’s IDE.  I’ve updated the README on the github repo to reflect this.  The ControlPad can be built from the Xcode project, but you’ll need to fill in your own developer credentials.  If you build the ControlPad with the Makefile, it does a fake codesign with the “ldid” tool.

• Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares.
• Spirit is not a carrier unlock.
• If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.)

Requirements

• Any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2.
• An activated device: one not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
• Any version of iTunes 9 (including 9.1.1).

We told you that the iPad 3G is as hackable as the Wifi iPad, and now we will show you that is possible to send SMS messages from iPad 3G through its baseband (no GUI).
The SMS messages were sent using a raw AT+CMGS command sent to the iPad baseband. That’s because so far, iPhone’s MobileSMS.app doesn’t run properly on the iPad.
Of course, you will need a SIM with SMS plan, and the iPad in the vid above uses a T-Mobile SIM cut down into a microSIM size. The AT&T plan attached to the SIM that came with the iPad isn’t allowing SMS messages….
